*Thought I’d (Mandalore) would bring this back to the top since I traded up to the new system. There isn’t a whole lot to add that people probably haven’t already seen/heard. It’s the same 360 in a new package. The package is very sleek, quieter, and hopefully cooler/more stable. I guess the biggest thing I (and my wife) noticed is that the 360 now makes a little sound when you use the buttons to turn it on/eject a disc.*
*I’ll also mention that GameStop is offering special trade-in values for old 360 hardware until July 18th. The prices were advertised, then they got pulled. They’re also only good when you put the trade towards the new system. I only paid $60 for the new system after trading in my old one and a bunch of games I haven’t played in forever.*
Saw this article on Yahoo and on Xbox Live talking about the new XBox360 system getting ready to hit stores as early as this week. Check out the article.

k, a few things stand out to me.
newer cooling ports and a “redesigned” interior make me think they’re addressing the red ring problems. i wonder if this will get the same three-year warranty.
the included wireless is a bonus. the ps3s have come with it standard, and it’s a welcome addition.
the biggest thing is the replaceable internal hard drive. i was thinking about getting a new hard drive, but this is huge. i think i will save up for this xbox as mine has been sitting on the shelf with the shell removed to keep it from overheating itself.
I figure I have a good 6 to 8 months left on my current xbox (lucky number 3) before it goes out. I will have to keep the 360 slim in mind. The Xbox 360 Slim. Slim in design, slims your wallet.
I saw over at Joystiq that MS is no longer manufacturing the “fat” 360. I wonder if they’ll continue to repair defective units or if they’ll just replace them with the new slim model.
My Best Buy replacement plan is up, but I still might get the red ring before my three years is up in November. Am I crazy to hope that my system red rings before November so I can find out?
@Clumsy The articles haven’t said one way or the other, but I wouldn’t count on the HDD not being proprietary.
I don’t think you’re crazy, I only think you’re betting with the odds.
Just watched the Joystiq video on the new 360. http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/14/xbox-360-slim-unwrapped-and-unboxed/#continued
The whole system is a sleek, shiny black. It also looks about 25% smaller overall.
The HDD is proprietary so no cheap upgrades. Of course, with 250 GB how soon would you need to upgrade anyway?
There are 5 USB ports now.
They have a separate optical audio port so you don’t need that silly adapter. (Thanks MS!)
The power source is smaller, but there’s still a power brick.
Conclusion? I’m really hoping I red ring so I possibly get the new hardware.
I know I will purchase the new 360; one of my ‘old fattys’ (360′s) will need to go out on our fall garage sale, along with all my old NASCAR stuff from the late Eighties and Nineties.
I’ll get one if and when mine craps out and can’t be fixed.
wait, the hdd is proprietary? d’oh! i saw an article that said, “swappable hard drive.” i assumed m$ would let people do their own hard drive swaps, not pay more for the same. =(
You were wishing pretty hard there. Of course, it is 250 GB. I don’t know that I’ll ever fill the thing up.
Are you using the built-in wireless on your new 360, Mandalore?
If so, did you notice any connectivity difference with the old style USB wireless clip-on?
I’m not actually using the built in wireless. My 360 sits right next to my router so there isn’t a need for the wireless. I figure the wired option will be more consistent anyway, and my router is a jerk when I connect new wireless devices to it sometimes.
I have heard that the wireless modem was having issues. Has anyone else heard this? I was in a Gamestop the other day and the guy said something about the wireless not working, but hardwire was just fine.
Hey Max,
I couldn’t find anything out there about an issue with the WiFi.
Digitaltrends had a very positive two page critique and their experience with the WiFi was listed on their Pros side of the spreadsheet.
About the on negative was the glossy, shiny finish which lends itself to glaring fingerprints. Overall they really were bragging up the new 360.
I am sooo tempted to get one; pretty hard to rationalize that purchase when I have my Elite, which I use daily, and an Arcade 360 in reserve.
But, SprStgVanilla needs his own 360, right Ishy?
You’ve only got one more day to take advantage of the Gamestop trade-in values. I’ll bet if you traded all your stuff in, you could get the new 360 for almost free.
Also, the glossy was a kind of weird choice, but, honestly, who goes and handles their console a bunch once it’s in place next to the TV?
I got one of these yesterday for much cheapness due to the trade in prices. It is awesome. Works like a dream, so quiet and im very happy with it.
Had to have it!
And, it is n-i-c-e!
The new machine boots much faster, whisper quiet, and aesthetically pleasing. The WiFi found my network and asked me, if I wanted to connect!
Thanks to Ishy and his family for making the 62 mile trip home to help me hook this bad boy up!
All the connections are ‘hidden’ behind the entertainment center/bookshelves and his assistance made this chore much easier…he’s young, I’m old.
Spent about forty minutes, early this morning, before work, downloading four games onto the hard drive…RDR, Gears 2, MW2, Borderlands.
Alan Wake is next.
