For all you old-school RPG fans, there’s a game called Breath of Death VII: The Beginning on Xbox Live for the amazing price of $1. It’s in the Indie section. There are no achievements for the game (bummer), but for that price, it’s a nice little escape. It’s very much a Japanese RPG — very open in exploration, battles are turn based, and battles begin randomly as you explore. There are nice tweaks to the system — battles in any area are limited, so once you hit the requirement, you’re free to explore without getting attacked. Those who still want to battle can force the option by picking a fight via in-game menu. The combo system also keeps things interesting, and the level up system lets you build up your characters according to your style of play.
The game takes me back to the old NES days of RPGs. What I enjoy most is the sense of humor — it is, after all, a parody of the genre. You can watch the trailer and read more about it here.

Man, if I didn’t already have games to play and not enough time to play them, I would be tempted. I think my next XBLA purchase is probably going to be The Secret of Monkey Island 2.
