I had a free rental so I picked up Bad Company 2 last night and started playing the campaign. I can safely say that I’m probably not going to rent it again, and I definitely won’t be buying it. The game does have great graphics, and it seems like their trying to craft a decent story. However, it feels like they’re sacrificing gameplay to get more story in.
The game is interrupted at regular intervals to show cut scenes when I feel like the same thing could have been accomplished by leaving me in first person and everyone just talking. The characters are also not very likable/stereotypes. There’s the Sarge (he’s just ONE mission from retirement. C’mon. Really?), the guy with glasses (who also happens to be nerdy/a conspiracy theorist), angry shoot everything guy (who complains about everything and is inexplicably lazy despite joining the armed service), and I guess the last guy is me (not too clear on that one since they never really told me). On top of that, the controls seem sluggish, and I feel like all the guns have the same effect/accuracy, and everyone found body armor (even the guerillas in the middle of nowhere). I’ll shoot somebody three times, they’ll kinda couch or fall over, but they’ll still get back up and take three more rounds. On the other end, I’m never really sure when I’m going to die. The on screen indicator is pretty vague.
I haven’t played the multiplayer yet, but the menu system seemed overly complicated. Overall, if you like first person combat games, you’ll probably enjoy BC2.
“I have nothing to add to the story per se, but I did have a formatting tip. Did you know that you can add a “more” link and have the story continue after clicking the link? There’s a little button in the post creation text box.
Not a huge deal, but it does prevent long stories from taking up the majority of the front page. It make things more readable.”
just started on that game a bit ago. it feels very, very different from modern warfare. also, agree with the cutscenes deal. very jarring when there’s a cutscene, and i’m thinking — how about you guys let me play instead of you showing me what my character is doing.
so far, my impression on the weapons are: WTF? didn’t i hit him?! it doesn’t have that mw urgency, or the production values of mw2, but, i heard that bc1 influenced the multiplayer of mw2, so i will reserve my full review till i finish it. i haven’t started on multiplayer, and if anyone wants to play, lemme know..
Thanks Cougar. Your post was at least twice as long as mine. Jerk.
I would also like to add that the building blow up real nice. It’s cool that most of the environment is destructible instead of just being able to shoot through it like in MW2.
I wish MW2 had the destructible enviorments.
I have just about completed the campaign; haven’t tried the multi-player, yet; but, that is coming, shortly.
I have no complaints worth mentioning; except to say, no game is perfect.
For Me; Bottom line, the game is just plain and simple, FUN! I haven’t enjoyed a campaign this much for a long time. It is fun just for fun.
The weapons are excellent with a variety to choose and the weapon crates allow for arming one’s self with the best weapons for the task at hand.
Very nice in-game graphics; I have had many, many OMG moments as I was going thru the campaign.
But, I am biased, I love well done war-based FPS.
Flynn and Haggard provide humor with Hag’s usual conspiracy theories fueled by his paranoia.
The music, as it was in the first BC, is unusual (compared to the general games out there) and enjoyable.
Easily 4.5 stars out of 5.0!
Good to have an alternate opinion of the game.
IMO…
WOW! WOW! WOW!
Just completed the campaign last night and have nothing but praise for the game; I gotta say it again, GREAT FUN!
The final firefight in the AN-225 Mriya was intense! Mile High on steriods!
With an invitation from Ty; I joined clumsyG and Hoodrat for my first BC2 multi-player experience, last night. Man, those kids are good!
We played Conquest and it was outstanding.
Truly a whole different experience than MW2; two different kinds of gaming mind-sets.
If you like FPS, squad-based team work, and I know you do, you’ll fall in love with this game!
A team wins by being a team not by being a bunch of individuals.
I wasn’t much help to the guys, I was way out of my element between controls (non-stop MW2 for almost 4 months) and available loadouts; but, it will get better.
I am amending my previous rating after trying multi-player; a solid 5 out of 5 stars!
I hope more AGMR’s buy this one.
i wasn’t a big fan of the single player experience — i might have a mw2 bias. but after playing multiplayer, i’m sold on the game. the servers aren’t laggy, the missions are squad based as opposed to individual stats and who gets the most kills. vehicles really make a difference in the game, and being able to pick a class that actually does something is awesome to see.
the only negative: the lobby. we played two games where we had only ONE guy going against our squad of 10. one thing about it — teams do not change, so i don’t think there’s a matchmaking process. will have to play more to find out. i’m really thinking about trading in mw2 for this game since i’m renting bc2. we shall sees~
